Small Balcony Makeover

Better late than never! Remember a while back I promised to share my Small Balcony Makeover? Well, I had our balcony all done and ready to photo shoot about 1-2months ago.

Then a baby bird landed on our balcony, so we let him and his mom hang out until he was ready to fly. Unfortunately, that little birdie pooped all over my pretty wooden tiles, furniture, and rails. So today I got to scrub it all off and photo shoot my new outdoor hangout!

If you are new to my blog, the images you are about to see are taken at a military base housing in Okinawa, Japan. We moved to Oki in June 2015, ever since I have been decorating, building and cleaning my butt off to make this small place on the other side of the world a cozy home for my family.

So, what started with a slab of concrete which I mainly used to spray paint my DIY’s on (can you tell?) Has turned into a beautiful balcony, where we play with Duplo legos, eat ice cream & drink wine after the kids have given me 5 more grays on my head.

This was not a fun place to spend time on before the makeover took place!

But, a quick trip to the local hardware store & $200 later I had a new balcony. The wooden tiles seemed to be a great idea. I also found them on Amazon and Ikea.

So after our friendly birds left, I fixed me a bucket of warm, soapy water and used a scrub brush to clean the entire tiles.

Once I was done I just dumped the water over the tiles which also swept anything that was underneath the tiles away. It took a few more buckets of clear water to rinse off everything and I had a brand new balcony!

I made sure to include my Ladder Plant Stand, the full tutorial can be found over at Remodelaholic. My plants are not as full and happy looking anymore because the Okinawan Summer heat killed almost all of them!

My today’s Farmhouse Style Wingback Chair Makeover project was one of those! When I bought the chair a few years ago, I had no vision on how to upholster it, but I figured that it would come together once I would brainstorm and look for inspiration.

Then, right before we moved overseas, I had to make the decision to let the chair go or take it with me and upholster the chair while stationed across the pacific. Crazy …                                                         READ MORE

  1. Wow is this base housing? What a transformation! I wished You had done this 3 years a go when we moved to Okinawa! Since we only have a little time left I’ll just stick to the concrete but it looks fab!

  2. Looks amazing! I want to do something like that in my yard! Also in your blurb about yourself it’s says “metalmith” should it be “metal smith”?

    1. Not only that, but also because the floor is ugly and very cold. My kids love to spend time on the balcony, this way I can have them outside with me. They sit on the floor and ply while mommy enjoys her latte!!! 😉

  3. I love the balcony space because it is the best place in my home to discover some relaxation time as equipped with some most advance chairs which offer peace without any disturbance. Love the space shared, good work, and make balcony a perfect place like here.

  4. The makeover looks really beautiful . I am going to try this in our new rental apartment in Hong Kong where space is a constraint and we have a small balcony but a fairly good mountain view . The pictures itself are making me feel so calm and relaxed ,I wonder how my space would – one for sure I know we are going to have lots of weekend mornings sipping tea there 🙂
    Great job !!

  5. Your balcony makeover looks fantastic! It’s amazing how a few simple changes can transform a space. The wooden tiles add such a warm and inviting feel, and the plant stand adds a lovely touch of greenery. It must be so nice to have a cozy outdoor hangout space for your family. Do you have any other projects planned for your balcony?
